As the land of cheese and meat, Wisconsin isn’t exactly noted for vegetarian and vegan options, which is why Greens N’ Grains organic & natural food store and deli is such a popular Door County destination. Owner Kathy Navis would travel long miles to Milwaukee or Madison to do her shopping until she opened the store in 2006. The store stocks sustainably grown kale, chard and spinach as well as locally grown chicken, eggs and beef, bulk nuts, coffee and teas and packaged organic products. The deli and juice bar is where visitors can sample fresh, organic dishes.
Greens N’ Grains purple building houses a cozy kitchen and dining section that features homey tables and chairs arranged around the store’s book and music section. Start with a freshly-pressed fruit juice or smoothie. I tried a refreshing concoction called sunrise that featured orange, coconut and pineapple juices. The deli offers a daily selection of soups, salads, pastas and paninis, as well as gluten free baked goods. The pumpkin and sweet potato soup was rich and lightly flavored with cinnamon and the cucumber, bean sprouts and tomato panini packed just the right amount of zest. I couldn’t resist trying the just baked vegan oatmeal cookies for dessert, they were chewy and surprisingly sweet.
