Aloha Mixed Plate, Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii
by Gudrun Enger, of Kitchen Gadget Girl
Less than an hour off the plane, we found ourselves seated beachside at this Hawaiian original in Lahaina. And boy, after a five-hour flight with little snack boxes, we were pretty excited to curb our appetites!
Aloha Mixed Plate, a plate lunch restaurant in Lahaina, is about 30 minutes from Kahalui and the airport in Maui. Mixed plate is a traditional Hawaiian meal, developed by sugar plantation workers who came from all over Asia. Along with rice and macaroni salad, the plate lunch might include kalua pork, Korean kalbi ribs, Chinese chow fun or any number of other dishes.
Since we were hungry, we all ordered regular sized portions – kalbi rib plate for me, Ali’I plate for the hubby (includes traditional LauLau, lomi lomi Salmon and poi) and the BBQ mixed plate for the kids. All came with rice and macaroni salad, and were reasonably priced, between $8.95-12.95. Smaller and larger portions are available, depending on your appetite.
The ambiance is great – you sit at picnic tables, under umbrellas, right on the ocean. If you don’t want cocktails, you get to sit closer to the water (some regulation about alcohol on the beach). All lunches are served on paper plates with plastic utensils, which makes cleanup super easy.
