Open the doors of any Colorado bakery and the fresh-baked smell of bread hits you like…well, a ton of loaves at the Great Harvest Bread Co. Located in metro Denver, the Arvada Great Harvest Bread Co. is just getting on its feet, but if the first smell is any indication, this is the north Denver bakery to pick up the freshest whole grain breads in town.
When a friend of mine asked me to check out a franchise Great Harvest Bread Co. near me, I was all in. Who doesn’t love bakeries and fresh baked bread? What I discovered was a bakery with “handcrafted” home-baked goodness, the old-fashioned way, with a twist. A twist of fresh ingredients, no artificial preservatives, and breads from the Great Harvest Bread Co. last 7-10 days if properly stored on your counter and not in the fridge, and fresh flour ground from whole wheat kernels gives it a unique taste – between a sweet wheat and bran taste.
The co-owner Beth McCrory greeted me and my grandchildren with a friendly smile and offered a sample of one of the fresh baked scents in the air, a huge slice of what she says is a kid’s favorite, Cinnamon Chip. The kids hunkered down at the kids’ corner, a mini-kid size table, full of activities. I opted for the Monday special: Cranberry Nut Crunch and I slathered on Agave butter (other toppings also available). Oh wow, warm baked goodness, that’s good for you, and surprisingly the grandkids enjoyed a bread that wasn’t white!
Beth reports that 700-1,000 loaves of bread and dozens of muffins and pies are baked here each week, including many “gluten-less” bread and muffins, such as Gluten-less Sunflower Millet and Gluten-less Cinnamon Chip. Honey Whole Wheat is baked fresh every day, along with Cinnamon Rolls, Raisin Walnut Cinnamon Rolls, Scones, muffins and cookies.
Arvada’s Great Harvest Bread Co. is sure to be a popular spot for casual Colorado dining or to pick up a fresh loaf, such as Tuscan Herb or Rosemary Garlic, for a dinner party.
Bonus: Great Harvest Bread Co.’s corporate website offers recipes using their fresh baked bread and bakery items.
