Strawberry Cupcakes At Lulu's

What a treat! We spent the weekend reveling in a Boston Bruins Stanley Cup Victory parade and then decided to reward ourselves after a long day of cheering with something as sweet as victory. Dessert. We wandered over to the North End in search of cupcakes. Our friend assured us that Lulu’s Sweet Shoppe was worth the wandering and far better than waiting in line for goodies at Mike’s Pastry with all the other visitors to Boston’s historic Italian neighborhood.

Just down from the intersection of Cross and Salem Streets is where you will find Lulu’s; they have moved from their original Hanover Street spot. It is a small shop that looks like the inside of cotton candy. Sweet, pink, warm and fuzzy. They sell a variety of candy and desserts but I had my blinders on and focused entirely on the cupcake case front and center.

Bruins Championship Cupcakes

The nice woman behind the counter gave us a tour shelf by shelf and tray by tray of the current flavors of cupcakes available for purchase. Red Velvet, Carrot Cake, Cookie Dough, Hostess Style…my mind spun with all of the options. Although the chocolate and vanilla cupcakes decorated with the Bruins’ spoked B seemed appropriate for the day, I couldn’t pass up the Chocolate & Peanut Butter on display. My two favorite things in the world of dessert.

My friend selected the Red Velvet and my husband was lured away by a fresh baked tray of Key Lime cupcakes just being placed in the case. We took our treats to go before we spent all our money on dessert.

This Key Lime Cupcake Didn't Last The Short Stroll To The Table

We strolled down to the greenway overlooking the fountains along Cross Street where all the kids were cooling off after the parade. Plopping down at a table we delicately unwrapped our treasures. Well, my friend and I did. My husband couldn’t wait and had eaten his cupcake in the short walk from Sweet Shoppe to outdoor people watching.

Boston's Best Cupcake As Far As I'm Concerned

Needless to say, he thoroughly enjoyed the experience – especially the sweet Key Lime frosting. My Chocolate Peanut Butter cupcake was extremely moist and sticky chocolate that refused to crumble. It was topped with gooey chocolate frosting topped with a huge dollop of light peanut butter flavor that left me licking my fingers. Our friend was equally pleased with her Red Velvet choice, especially since she was not previously a “Red Velvet kind of gal.” I think she is a convert now.

I absolutely loved Lulu’s. The cupcakes are made fresh and with love. I could pull up a stool and hang out in their kitchen to lick the bowl if they’d let me. I generally go out of my way to visit the North End when I want exquisite pasta. Now I will go out of my way to visit the North End to also enjoy some of the best cupcakes outside of dear old grandma’s oven.
