Gelato in hand, stroll this quieter side of Venice Italy

Travel to Italy and it doesn’t matter where you visit, eating a scoop of gelato will likely be a highlight of your day. Tired after sightseeing? Want a little dessert? On a tight travel budget but want a treat? All of these questions can be answered with gelato!

If you have not heard of this before, gelato is Italian for ice cream, and it is amazing!  One of my favorite, and popular places in Venice to enjoy gelato is at Gelateria Nico.  It is in the Dorsoduro district at the far end of Fondamenta Zattere facing the old waterfront.

The location is perfect because you can stop for a scoop whether you are rushing to catch the vaporetto to Lido or if you are just quietly strolling the side canals enjoying the sights.  If you have the kids with you, the parlor is nice to sit at too.  We walked up to their “to go” window outside along the canal and had our gelato while we kept enjoying the sights.

We were there a week, and I admit that one day we made our way over to split their famous hazelnut and chocolate ice cream smothered in whipped cream.  It was out of this world delicious and a huge treat after spending about four hours at the Peggy Guggenheim Museum and walking through the Accademia Galleries.

We thought about the Pension Accademia Villa Maravegie but rented an apartment next to the Guggenheim near the Grand Canal – and found ourselves walking past Gelateria Nico at some point almost daily.

It was really relaxing for us to stroll the quiet waterfront in the morning and early evening after dinner.  The atmosphere is peaceful, you don’t see or hear the same volume of water traffic as you do on the Grand Canal. With few tourists around you feel like a local.

With its small bridges connecting its little islands into one city, Venice reminded me of San Francisco.  Within the city proper it is not that large and you’re often surprised at how far you can go walking.
