The line is all part of the fun

When we landed last month in Maui, I was determined to be a good little food blogger and track down every shave ice place in Central and West Maui and report back to you the best on the island. My waistline was going to take one for the team. As it so happens, we came upon the best our second day in and I stopped my search.  

The best is in downtown Lahaina, on Front Street, next to Cheeseburger in Paradise, and down the street from the Crocs Shop. Tucked in the Old Poi Factory, Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice is by far the tastiest we have ever tried. Using a machine that shaves the ice (as opposed to crushing), the light flakes of ice are packed into dishes then drizzled with any one of 35 delicious flavors.

To be sure, before I declared this the Best Shave Ice on Maui, I made sure to try lots of different flavors. With the help of my family, we think we made it through 14 of the 35 homemade flavors including Passion Orange, Li Hing Mui, Kiwi, Pineapple Blue Hawaiian, Bubblegum, Rootbeer, Lime, Cherry, Lychee, and Strawberry.

To help with the decision-making, Ululani’s has also put together several combinations, including my husband’s new favorite, the Haleakala, with coconut, lychee and cream.

You can order a no-frills shave ice for $4 (small) or $4.50 (large). Embellish your creation with the addition of ice cream (Roselani’s vanilla or Haupia), adzuki beans or mochi balls.

My ultimate favorite was a Local Motion with vanilla ice cream and extra Li Hing Mui sprinkled over the top!
