There may be a Starbucks on every corner in Portland, Oregon, but that doesn’t mean they’re the only game in town. In a city like Portland, which is under the cloud-line most of the year, coffee is important, and cafe-culture is as big as it is in Europe. Yes, Portlanders love their cups of Joe!
Having grown up in Portland, I believe this love of the toasted bean has something to do with the weather. I always felt like I couldn’t wake up in Portland, the overcast days creating a dreamlike and drowsy state of mind for me. Hence the coffee, lattes, cappuccinos, espressos, double breves……or the ultimate pick-me-up: the double shot mocha.
You can get a mocha anywhere in Portland, but the top spot to go for this sweet treat is a chocolate shop, namely, Cacao. The downtown shop features a hand picked selection of chocolate from around the world, including an extensive range of premium solid chocolate bars and handmade chocolates. The most exciting part of Cacao though is their ‘drinking chocolate’ which includes specialty hot cocos and coffee drinks.
You don’t have to get a mocha at Cacao, you could also just pop in for a latte. On a rainy day, head to one of their two Portland locations and have a very local caffeine experience. One drawback: there’s no where to sit in the Heathman Cacao, so you’ll have to take your cup to go.
