Schiavi Wine Bar - Venice Italy - photo by Sharon Castellanos
When you vacation somewhere for a week, do you find your “place” that you return to again and again? It can be a favorite restaurant, cafe or even a wine bar. We had such a place during our week in Venice, Italy.
Cantine del Vino Già Schiavi is the perfect spot to make your own when staying in Venice. It is in the Dorsoduro area, not far from the Museo dell’Accademia and the Peggy Guggenheim Museum but rather than being on the busy Grand Canal this wine bar is along a quiet side canal.
This wine bar has everything – great atmosphere, amazing selection of wines, knowledgeable staff and tasty snacks! Family run, this typical wine bar or “bacari” closes early in the evening around 9:00 pm and for an hour after lunch. We often stopped in for their freshly made bar snacks or “cicchetti” after an afternoon of sightseeing.
Given the amount of walking you do in Venice, it is easy to be hungry and ready for a snack more substantial than a gelato. Also since most people don’t eat dinner until after 8:00 pm, you need a snack to hold you over!
My favorite treats for about a Euro each, were the salted codfish or baccalà mantecato on a slice of French bread. Other yummy classics are sweet/sour sardines on sliced bread and Crostini with layers of prociutto.
Già Schiavi is a popular wine bar and at times the number of people eating and sipping their drinks spills over the sidewalk. We took our little plates of goodies and perched on the wall and on the steps of a bridge overlooking the canal.

[...] Cantine del Vino Gia Schiavi stayed on the top of my list of favorite bacaro or wine bar, but that might be due to its location close to our apartment in Venice. However another fabulous maker of these uniquely Venetian snacks was Enoteca Al Prosecco, near the Rialto Bridge and the Santa Lucia train station. [...]
