After work this is one of my favorite places to meet my husband or a friend for a drink and snacks. The California Wine Merchant is in the Marina neighborhood of San Francisco. They have wine tastings all the time and they sell bottles in their retail shop. They are a real wine bar that has been around for years, not a restaurant with a wine list.
All of the staff are very knowledgeable about the wines they pour as well as the bottles that they sell. You can rely on their ability to answer all of your questions – I don’t know anything about wine but I always learn something new when we stop in here. It is enjoyable to come here, relax with a glass of wine and sometimes find a great gift for my more wine-savvy friends and family.
Check out Monday Night Winery Night when they have tastings and special prices. This can be a great way to learn about a local winery. Stop by any day of the week since they offer an average of 35 to 50 wines by the glass with prices ranging from $7 to $20/glass.
You can order by the glass or the “half glass” for a taste. Create your own flight of wines to try if you want. The staff is very friendly so don’t be shy when ordering if you need help or suggestions. Sit by the window if you get a chance and enjoy the Chestnut Street scene once you have a glass. On a Friday night or any warm night, the people watching is priceless.
They offer a nice selection of cheese and olives, besides Seattle Chocolate Truffles but if you need something more substantial, you can always head across the street to Dragon Well for great Chinese food.
