"Gorge"ous View in Ronda Spain
Sigh. This is an amazing restaurant and one of my new favorites. Don Miguel is both restaurant and hotel, in one of the famous white washed hill towns of this region of Spain. The village of Ronda is located high above the resort town of Marbella on the Costa del Sol. Driving at a relaxed pace, it took us less than an hour to get there.
As Rick Steves’ pointed out, Ronda is famous for being the birthplace of modern bullfighting, but for me it was the stunning views from both a bridge and Don Miguel Restaurant that caught my attention.
Here is a view from our table that was good at distracting us during our delicious meal. We looked out over the famous gorge and a bridge that crossed into the old town quarter. Ernest Hemingway and Orson Welles spent many summers in Ronda as part-time residents of Ronda’s old town quarter, and I can see why. This is a walkable town, which comes in handy after eating the suckling pig at Don Miguel Restaurant.
On many menus, but especially those in restaurants close to where many hunt, suckling pig is a special dish on the menu. It is a bit like the pulpos, being a feature on most menus at coastal Spanish restaurants. We like to try local dishes, so we ate a lot of pulpos and each tried suckling pig at least once on this trip. At Don Miguel Restaurant, it was my turn to order this and I won! My suckling pig was the best of all. Very tender and slow roasted with little grease.

I’m happy that I ordered a nice endive salad to start because this main course was filling – and only 17 Euro. This is a bargain compared to many other restaurants we came across, especially considering the quality. We had a very nice bottle of white wine with our meal that paired well with the meats and salads. My husband had a nice grilled seabass with paprika sauce for 14 Euro. And yes, those are huge slices of garlic in the sauce. Bring gum! We ended our meal with a sweet pineapple wedge sliced and served in its skin, and that’s it. Perfection.
