Cornish Pasty Shop at Victoria British Rail Station
One of the best things about travel is tasting the food along your journey. I love the challenge of finding not only good tasting food but food that is good for you, especially at airports and train stations. Recently we were back in London, traveling from Gatwick Airport into London via Victoria Station on British Rail. Having not eaten much except some Boxer Chips on the plane, I was feeling peckish (That is “Britspeak” for hungry).
Our short ride from the airport into Victoria Station had me thinking about sweet then savory food ideas. As we pulled into the train station and walked our bags out to the main floor, I saw a vision..a Pasty Shop sign! The Pasty Shop are makers of tasty treats typically found in the Southwest of England in the area known as Cornwall. I was in heaven when I pulled my suitcase up to the counter and immediately saw the classic Cornish Pasty on the menu.
A Cornish pasty (pronounced pah-stee) is a shortcrust pastry pie, usually made with potatoes, onion and turnip plus other various fillings. They are delicious, like a homemade Hot Pocket, only a hundred thousand times better! Why? The Pasty Shop which began in 2003 uses all natural ingredients sourced locally. They buy potatoes from a third generation Cornish farmer and they use only skirt steak, which is traditional pasty meat. I can tell you that our pasties had flaky crusts and the filing was piping hot and delicious. Our two pies were seasoned well, not too salty, and definitely not greasy! We finished them in less than five bites, they were so good.
With fifteen locations in all, here are some of the stations where you can find these mouth watering, savory snacks around the UK and London:
- Birmingham New Street Station
- Edinburgh Waverley Station
- Manchester Piccadilly Station
- Waterloo Railway Station
- Charing Cross British Rail Station

I’m most dissapointed with the service or should I say lack of service at your Birminghdm store. While on a train from London I Was quite hungary but decided to wait until I arrived at New St to treat myself to a pasty from your store. When I arrived at 18.30 23rd Feb I went to your store wanting to spend money but I could not! There were two staff on duty who couldn’t be bothered to acknowledge me, they were busy… So I waited as I thought they were talking about something work related & assumed they would serve me as soon as they had finished. However once they finished their conversation one looked at me & brushed passed me (think I was in his way) the other started doing something on the back counter. Am I invisible? Isn’t it there job to generate sales. I couldn’t belive it, so off I went & spent my money elsewhere.
