Places I Miss: Don Cuco In Glendale

Don Cuco, why'd you have to up and leave us?

A few weeks ago the teenagers were craving Mexican food – as they do six out of seven days of the week – so we headed to one of our favorite restaurants, Don Cuco in Glendale. We’ve been going there since the kids were little – the roominess of the place, the distracting fountain, the excellent salsa and bean dip were great for little ones. Not to mention the killer margaritas to keep the adults happy.

So imagine our despair when we drove into the parking lot and the attendants told us the restaurant had closed six months earlier. Yes, I used the word ‘despair’ because that accurately describes our emotions. I’d use the words ‘distraught, hysterical and inconsolable’ but no need to get too dramatic here – after all, it was just a restaurant. *wiping away tears*

Breakfast and Lunch at The Egg & I Arvada, Colorado

Arvada’s The Egg & I serves breakfast and lunch, but its meat and potatoes are in its breakfast. Mother always said to have a good breakfast, and that’s the premise of The Egg & I Restaurant, an Arvada, Colorado casual dining franchise.

Eat a good breakfast at The Egg & I, Arvada, Colorado

The perfect time to eat breakfast, in my opinion, is any time of the day, from early morning to afternoon. (And yes, early morning can mean those 2:00 am after bar stops…) The Egg & I builds its menu around the comfort foods of breakfast. Eggs? Check – from over easy to Omelets to Benedict. Throw the eggs in a skillet, mix it up with potatoes and meat, and dive in. Lather your pancakes or waffles with maple syrup and get your sugar fix early. How about a Pineapple Coconut or Apple Cinnamon Granola Pancake? Single waffle or stacks of pancakes.

You name it, and their extensive breakfast menu will feed your need for a simply tasty breakfast.  Arvada’s Egg & I Restaurant seals the deal with a super fabulous breakfast. Read More »

Say Goodbye To The 9¢ Cup Of Coffee At Philippe’s In L.A.

Dig the change out of the couch – coffee is going up from nine to forty-five cents at Philippe's.

The price of a cup of coffee at the world-famous Philippe’s in downtown Los Angeles will soon be going up 500%. But don’t panic – that just means a mug of their hot joe will now set you back a whopping 45¢. I believe that’s the cost of just one coffee stirrer at Starbucks.

Philippe’s is most famous for their fantastic French dipped sandwiches, but their inexpensive coffee is pretty well known, too. And no wonder, when you could plunk down one thin dime – nine cents for the coffee plus one cent for tax – on their well-worn counter and enjoy your caffeine fix. “My grandfather said, ‘I always wanted everyone to be able to afford a cup of coffee’,” Philippe’s general manager Richard Binder says on their website.

Romantic Lunch at Cafe Kafka

Cafe Kafka

Valentine’s Day is not really celebrated in Spain, but if you’re inclined to be romantic on the 14th consider a table for two at Cafe Kafka. Sunshine streams through Cafe Kafka’s large windows which look out onto a small side-street in Barcelona’s artsy Born area. I love the interior design at this sassy-meets-chic restaurant, especially the colorful bar. Read More »
