Peasant Pies in San Francisco will make you happy and full
Living in a big urban environment, sometimes we need to have that special place that we go to any time we need a dose of happiness. Peasant Pies is that place for me. Let’s start with the location. They are perfectly situated on 24th Street near Castro Street in the Noe Valley neighborhood of San Francisco. This is easy to reach by every form of transportation from foot to car. For many city visitors or residents, location plays a big part in the happiness quotient. Next we have the price.Pricing for sweet or savory pies start at $2.85 each, for the first 35 pies. Each savory pie is filled with fresh vegetables, poultry, beef or seafood and bakes in a crisp bread crust. This is another reason I love them. The dough is special. I don’t know how but the combination of ingredients is tasty and they have a way of making the outside toasty and the inside cooked but soft, without being under-cooked. I love that!
Where can you find them? If you cannot find one of the three Peasant Pie store fronts in Noe Valley, in Mission Bay or in the Sunset District of San Francisco, you can find the pies being sold in stores such as Whole Foods Market, Andronico’s and Mollie Stone’s Market locally. They are great “hot pocket” meals to buy for a summer road trip, like to Disney World.
The handmade pies are very no-frills, which I love. You will find simple ingredients such as unbleached and whole wheat flour, yeast, olive oil, salt and water. With the pies filled with savory or sweet ingredients and baked until golden brown. My favorite choices always seem to include their spinach and feta cheese. However, another delicious choice is zucchini, mushroom and cheese or chicken and potato.
Another wonderful benefit to eating your peasant pie here rather than taking it with you, is the seating. At the Noe Valley location, you can always find a seat by the window which makes for great people watching. We love it – with the corner action and the great food and atmosphere, you won’t be in a hurry to go anywhere.
Inspired by a favorite meal of 19th Century French Villagers, these great little hand held bites (for me, probably four, tops) are convenient to take anywhere – no need for a plate or even a fork! Maybe think of them for your next picnic or 4th of July celebration.

I got in the habit of eating savory pies while living in New Zealand but have found little of these wonderful creations in the U.S. How exciting to know there are SEVERAL shops in San Francisco. Yummm!

Gudrun – Yes! And Yes! Fresh from their counter is best…..tho’ buying them in the store helps in a pinch.
Alison – You would love these little “hot pockets” of joy. So delicious…and easy to walk around with too.
