There is just something wonderful about a warm American diner filled with red vinyl booths and formica counter tops that makes you want to come inside, settle into a seat and order way too much food. It is important to have a “go-to” diner in your hometown and for me, this is the Peninsula Fountain and Grill in Palo Alto California. This restaurant goes by several other names, The Palo Alto Creamery, The Peninsula Creamery or just The Diner, but it always serves the same tasty comfort food in the same great atmosphere.
The Peninsula Fountain and Grill has terrific options for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I especially love to go there for a weekend breakfast. My husband and I grab a newspaper and do the crossword together while drinking coffee and waiting for our food. The place is always hopping, but, I have never waited more than 10 minutes for a table. If I am by myself or not feeling very particular, I will just grab a stool at the counter and enjoy my meal while periodically peaking into the busy kitchen.
No one should miss out on their Hashbrown Pie-a heaping plate of hashbrowns cooked with green onions, tomotoes, melted cheese and served with two fried eggs and toast. Yumm. For lunch you have everything from large juicy hamburgers, turkey sandwiches and Cobb salad. For dinner, there is meatloaf, pork tenderloin and many other appealing options. They are famous for their thick creamy shakes in just about any flavor you can imagine.
While sitting in the comfortable red booths at the Palo Alto Creamery and listening to the murmur of voices humming through the room, you might forget, for a moment, that you are in Silicon Vally. You could perhaps be in some small town, perhaps even in an earlier decade, before the internet and the iPhone. That is, of course, until you look at the khaki-clad techies in the table next to you or glance down the menu and see the “burger and bubbly” option for $100 (one of their juicy burgers served with a bottle of Dom Perignon). Then you realize you could be in no other place than Palo Alto, the heart of Silicon Valley!
