Visiting friends who live just outside of Florence taught me that the area has a thriving agritourism industry that would be perfect for a return visit with my family. Similar to bed and breakfasts, what you find are converted rustic farm houses that have rooms or small apartments with complete kitchens and often pools. This style can be a nice and casual alternative to staying at the Westin Excelsior Florence for example.
We were already staying with our friends but what we learned is that at these farmhouses, you will often also have a small restaurant that is open to everyone, not just guests, if you call for a reservation. Our friends took us to Poggio agli Ulivi with its beautiful setting in the Mugello Valley of Italy, for a wonderful dinner in the resort’s restaurant.
Besides the incredibly beautiful Tuscan landscape, the Mugello area is known for its cinghiale or wild boar and for its Florentine steaks. This restaurant is small and the chef takes his time preparing both Tuscan and Mugello dishes. We had several courses, including some antipasti of local salami, olives and cheeses. Because of our location the first pasta course served included the famous wild boar. The flavors paired perfectly with wine from the region.
Our friends recommended it and what turned out to be a great idea was ordering the Florentine steak to share between the four of us. Bistecca alla Fiorentine is best served medium rare so that you get the most out of its amazing flavors and how the chef prepares it. Also you don’t need to eat very much of it to be satisfied. We were heaven and by the end of our meal, and after the espresso, we realized that we just had a four hour dinner. Bellissima!
I love this way of eating and with the relaxed atmosphere, it has to be better for your digestion. Honestly it almost felt like we were eating at someones house, only in another country. It was that nice and very friendly. The prices aren’t outrageous and the cuisine is molto bene!
