Whenever we travel we try to stay in rental apartments or villas in order to really experience a new country. Besides deepening the experience, we get the chance to cook for ourselves, which is economical and have a more relaxed freedom. Staying at a hotel is always nice but renting a furnished apartment and grocery shopping can give you a greater sense of what life is like there than just sightseeing.
While we were staying in Southern Spain, we stayed in Estepona just outside of Marbella on the Costa del Sol. One night we decided to stop in at the nearby strip mall and buy one of the most succulent roasted chickens this side of my kitchen!
Asador Belga literally means “grilled Belgian” according to Google Translate but it wasn’t a place for cannibals, this was a cute little kiosk selling roasted chickens, that was run by Belgians!
We met two very nice brothers who run a small but brisk business in this commercial strip mall along the road, the more coastal A-7 (rather than the toll AP-7 road). They had two ovens with about a dozen skewers of whole chickens cooking. We had a choice of extras like big thick cut home fries, which we got.
Our entire meal was 8.50 Euro (with Belgian fries) and all we had to add was a little vegetable and bottle of wine – both of which we bought on the cheap at the Mercadona grocery store. Sigh, I still miss the amazing wines for 6 Euros and less. This was one of our best and least expensive meals of the entire vacation, which is one reason why I forgot to take a photo of the chicken once we got home.
