The Girl and the Fig in Sonoma, California
After a day of wine tasting in the Sonoma Valley, slip into the historic Sonoma Hotel on a corner of the Sonoma Plaza. You’re immediately transported to a French country restaurant.
In a nod to food found in a countryside cafe in Provence, with the same passionate ability to use only the best, fresh ingredients, The Girl and The Fig Restaurant is sure to please the most discriminating palate.
The cozy ambience includes an exquisite antique bar, comfortable sofas with ottomans that double as end tables, and a friendly staff that extends a warm welcome. While waiting for our table I was tempted by their menu of house cocktails and chose their First Street Cosmo, a blend of Arette tequila, fresh lime juice, cranberry juice, and St. Germain elderflower liqueur served in a martini glass. The night was off to a good start.
My fig and arugula salad had toasted pecans, pancetta, and chevre, and was lightly tossed in a fig and port vinaigrette. Cornmeal and goat cheese fritters were melt-in-your-mouth delicious, and I knew I was in heaven when I tasted petrale sole served with a leek confit and crawfish-tarragon beurre blanc. The grand finale was a fig and port ice cream with just enough sweetness to finish off my meal.
But I missed something that night. I love the wines that come from Sonoma County. The full bodied, buttery, oaked Chardonnays, the rich, elegant Cabernet Sauvignons, and the inky, chewy Zinfandels. None of these wines were on the wine list. They have a “Rhone-alone” theme, serving only Rhone varietals that originated from the Rhone Valley in France. Many of the wines on their list are from California. The lighter style is fine, just not what I was looking for.
So the next time I’ll just have another First Street Cosmo.

[...] The Girl and the Fig: Sonoma is such a lovely setting in November and the Girl and The Fig is my favorite restaurant in the area. Plus, Bon Appétit names them one of their Top Ten Thanksgiving Restaurants! They are serving a 3-course menu with optional wine pairing at $50/adult and $20/kid. [...]
