Casual Lunch at The Mooring in Newport

Casual Lunch at The Mooring in Newport

Newport, Rhode Island, has a lot of fantastic restaurants – as befits an upscale vacation town. The first restaurant we went to there was recommended to us by the Convention and Visitors Bureau as being low key, child-friendly, and typical of great eats for lunch in Newport. The Mooring, right on the water at Sayer’s Wharf, really fits the bill.

We arrived hungry after a drive down from Boston, and didn’t mind the 10-minute wait. During the summer, The Mooring is bustling with tourists looking for some authentic Newport-style seafood, and it would probably be smart to make reservations for dinner in July and August. Off-season, I’m sure it’s substantially quieter. We waited at the bar, where a friendly bartender blended up a couple of nonalcoholic smoothies for my kids, and something a little stronger for me and my spouse. Yum!

Once seated at our table, my kids enjoyed watching the boats sailing or tooling in and out of the harbor, and

the sea breeze really got our appetites going. We asked our waitress what she recommended for such a hungry family, and without hesitation she replied, “Oh, you want the Bag of Doughnuts!” …Bag of doughnuts? I’m sold. And look at the photo; these little round savory fritters are a favorite at The Mooring, with bite-size pieces of locally-caught seafood in the mix.  We attacked them like wolves, and came back the next day just for another order.

We also enjoyed a great bowl of new England style clam chowder, a lobster croissant, ahi tuna sandwich, and a very tasty tuna melt. The seafood here is really worth recommending - of course, there are plenty of salads and other types of entrees, but it seems more appropriate to get seaport at this harbor side restaurant. It’s more in keeping with the atmosphere.

Anyone traveling to Newport, Rhode Island will have plenty of high-end restaurant options. However, for a casual lunch in a lovely setting – with the best lobster croissant I’ve ever had – The Mooring is a top choice. Children love it here, but the setting is just wonderful for a romantic adult meal too. Don’t forget the Bag of Doughnuts!
