If you have never tried dim sum or if you have only had the frozen kind from a grocery store, here is your chance to taste some of the best dim sum San Francisco has to offer. Outside of Chinatown, Yank Sing is one of my favorite places to have lunch when shopping downtown with friends or family, especially during the holidays. The elegant atmosphere puts you into a good mood and the refined quality of the food makes the meal special.
For the uninitiated dim sum (pronounced deem sum), is this wonderful series of small dishes of both savory and sweet ingredients. At this restaurant, carts make their way out of the kitchen and are pushed slowly by the many tables giving you a chance to choose what looks or smells good at that moment.
You can select from dishes like Chinese broccoli, crispy duck, deep fried crab claws or steamed dumplings filled with shrimp and green onions or mushrooms and scallops, just to give you an idea. The servers will have stacks of bamboo trays filled with steaming dishes with three and four servings.
I love to drink the house Chrysanthemum tea that is served in this beautiful glass teapot. Yank Sing has a second location in the Rincon Center, near the Embarcadero waterfront. Their larger downtown location is tucked between Market and Mission streets which might be a little hard to find, but you will find lots of parking lots close by. If you don’t have time for lunch, either location offers Yank Sing 2 Go for delicious food to take away.

Yum, the pictures look delicious. We are pretty loyal to Tom Kiang in our visits to San Francisco, but will have to give this one a try. The To-go menu is really reasonably priced, too!

I love Ton Kiang also but this spot is consistently great when you are downtown.

I like City View, too. My friend Alice swears it’s the same as Yank Sing, and it’s a lot less expensive. Those little plates add up fast.

When I lived in SF, I would head to the Rincon Ctr. Yack Sing to have dim sum with friends. Deep fried goodness and scrumptious streamed dumplings… mmmm. You might pay a small premium, but the quality of their food is superior. My parents from China even liked it… my dad is a harsh critic.
